How to Care for Your Weft Hair Extensions

Sydney’s Luxury Guide to Long-Lasting, Natural, Beautiful Hair

Weft hair extensions can look seamless, soft, and completely natural — but only when they’re cared for correctly. As someone who has been working with extensions since 2006 and specialises in seamless, ultra-lightweight blends, I’ve seen firsthand how the right care routine keeps wefts beautiful for months, while the wrong habits can cause dryness, tangling, and unnecessary shedding.

Here is the ultimate guide to caring for your weft extensions so they stay silky, comfortable, and luxurious — every single day.

1. Brush Your Extensions the Right Way

Brushing is one of the most important steps in extension care — but it must be done correctly.

Use the right brush

Choose a soft-bristle or loop extension brush. These glide through the hair without pulling on the wefts.

Technique matters:

  • Always support the top of the weft with your hand
  • Start brushing from the ends, working upward
  • Brush at least morning and night to prevent tangles or worse – matting.

This keeps your natural hair safe and your extensions smooth.

2. Wash With Care

Using the right home haircare shampoo and conditioner will give Weft extensions extended longevity. Use your hairdressers recommended shampoo and conditioner OR choose a salon quality shampoo and conditioner free from sulfates, protiens, peptides and keratins. Hydrating and metal detox shampoos and conditioners are generally better.

3. Condition Generously

Extensions need hydration to stay soft and silky, but conditioner should never be applied directly on the weft track.

Why? It can loosen the beads, weaken stitching, and cause slippage.

Apply conditioner:

  • Mid-lengths to ends only
  • Using a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly

Your extensions will feel satin-soft without compromising the installation.

This prevents matting, preserves the integrity of the weft, and keeps your scalp comfortable.

4. Heat Styling Guidelines

Extensions can handle heat — but treat them gently.

Follow these rules:

  • Use heat protectants
  • Keep hot tools at or below 180°C
  • Never use thermal tools directly on the weft line

Gentle styling equals longevity and shine.

5. Avoid Product Buildup

Extensions can quickly look dull or feel heavy with the wrong products.

Avoid:

  • Heavy oils
  • Keratin, Protiens and peptides
  • Protein-heavy treatments
  • Dry shampoos on the weft area

Use:

  • Lightweight serums
  • Hydrating sprays
  • Hydrating leave in hair moisturisers/treaments/conditioners
  • recommended home haircare shampoo and conditioners
  • metal detox home care products

A clean, lightweight routine keeps extensions fresh and movable.

6. Professional Maintenance Every 5 – 10 Weeks

Even with perfect care at home, professional maintenance is essential.

During a maintenance session, I will:

  • Tighten or move up your wefts
  • Check stitching and bead tension
  • Remove any natural shedding trapped in the weft
  • Trim and blend so everything looks seamless

Routine maintenance keeps your scalp healthy and your extensions naturally blended.

7. When to Replace Your Extensions

High-quality wefts can last 6–12 months with proper care.

Signs you may need a new set:

  • Dryness that no longer responds to masking
  • Excess shedding
  • Loss of shape or elasticity
  • You’re ready for a colour or length change

A fresh set anytime from 14 months keeps your hair looking expensive and effortless.

Weft Extensions Should Feel Like Your Hair — Just Better

When cared for correctly, weft extensions blend seamlessly, style beautifully, and feel completely natural. They should never feel heavy, uncomfortable, or high-maintenance.

Your routine doesn’t need to be complicated — it just needs to be consistent.
