Pre-Appointment Hair Prep

How to hack a salon consultation

A Guide for Clients Who Want Exceptional Results

One of the biggest factors in how beautiful your hair looks after a salon visit has nothing to do with the products, the technique, or even the service itself.
It begins before you sit in the chair.

How you prepare for your appointment — and how well you communicate with your stylist — sets the tone for the entire experience. As a colourist, cutter, and extension expert with nearly 25 years in the industry, I can confidently say this:

My best work happens when we are on the same page, speaking the same language, and working toward the same vision — together.

This is where pre-appointment hair prep becomes essential.

Below is everything you should do before your next colour, keratin, or weft extension appointment to ensure your hair — and your results — look their absolute best.

1. Bring Visual References (Even If You’re Not 100% Sure What You Want)

Your original post said it perfectly:
Clients often struggle to describe what they want — because they’re not completely sure themselves.

Photos bridge the gap.

Bring:

  • Looks you love
  • Colours you don’t love
  • Cuts you’re drawn to
  • Styles you’re never wearing again
  • Extensions results you admire
  • Any inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, editorial work, or past photos of your own hair

These references give me insight into your taste, not just your end goal. They help me understand your aesthetic: polished, messy, minimal, glamorous, high-impact, understated, classic, edgy — and everything in between.

Even if none of the photos are “exactly” what you want, they tell me how you see yourself, and that is invaluable.

2. When possible, arrive at your first appointment air that has been allowed to dry naturally

A clean starting canvas allows me to:

  • Assess your real hair texture
  • See your natural tone
  • See the natural growth patterns and how your hair naturally falls
  • Evaluate previous colour
  • Judge porosity
  • Examine extension health
  • Plan formulas accurately

3. Know Your Hair History — Honesty Helps Your Results

Every chemical service depends on your hair’s past.

Before your appointment, make a quick mental list of:

  • Previous colour (salon or box dye)
  • Keratin treatments
  • Hair extensions
  • Periods of heavy breakage
  • Medications that affect the hair
  • Heat damage
  • Mineral buildup or copper from Sydney tap water
  • Swimming (chlorine or ocean)

You’re never “over-sharing” — the more I know, the better I can protect your hair and avoid unexpected results.

6. Communicate Honestly — And Expect Honesty Back

In your original writing, you touched on a fundamental truth:
The best hair happens when both client and stylist speak openly and confidently.

Before we begin, we will talk through:

  • What you want
  • What you don’t want
  • What’s worked in the past
  • What hasn’t
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your maintenance tolerance
  • Your long-term hair goals

I will be honest — always.
If something isn’t achievable in one session, not suitable for your hair, or not aligned with your face, colouring, or lifestyle, I will tell you — and explain why.

This is not about saying “no.”
It’s about saying “here’s how we get you the best possible version of what you want.”

Mutual trust creates beautiful hair.

7. Have Faith

The Best Hair Happens When You Prepare — And When We Trust Each Other

Beautiful results don’t just happen in the salon; they begin long before you walk in the door. The more prepared you are — clean hair, clear inspiration, honest communication, realistic goals, and trust — the more seamlessly I can create a result that feels effortless, personalised, and truly you.

If you want your next extensions, colour, or keratin appointment to be your best yet, this is your checklist. And if you’re ready to book or want help preparing for your next visit, I’m always here to guide you.

Premium hair services take time, expertise, and collaboration. It’s your time, let it feel like it.
